Setting: The school conference room

Persons Involved: You and the parents of Jack, one of your students

Background: Jack has so many absences and tardies that he is in danger of failing.

Circumstances: Jack is bored and under challenged. He has become a behavior problem and is disruptive in class. Jack has been tested and shown to have an I.Q. of 161. The only accelerated programs available require that the family provide transportation. This is impossible for them.

Simulation: Jack’s parents are upset and angry at the school. They say that it is the school’s responsibility to provide academically appropriate work for their gifted child. They blame Jack’s disruptive behavior on you, as his teacher, for failing to meet his needs.
Consider the following in your response:

What are your objectives?

How will you respond to his parents?

Will you accept giftedness as an excuse for absenteeism and tardiness?

Why or why not?

What will you say to Jack tomorrow?

Save Texas Schools Conference

TAPP members are invited to attend a city-wide conference of educators, students, and community members who want to learn about how public schools are financed and what to do about the recent cuts to education. Friday's session from 6 to 9 p.m. is free with speakers such as Mayor Castro, the School Superintendent of the Year, legislators, students, parents and teachers. Saturday's session from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. costs $20, but includes meals and conference materials, and childcare if you register in advance. Special sessions for college students are scheduled. TAPP will cover the registration cost for the first four people who contact Ms. Cruz-Gonzales at ncruz-gonzales@alamo.edu We will also arrange a car pool from SAC if needed. We do need to hear from you by Tuesday, Jan. 31, so we can plan. It should be a great learning experience!

Any Baby Can Community Service Project

ANY BABY CAN HOLIDAY GIFT GIVIING PROGRAM

TAPP needs your help to fulfill a less fortunate family’s needs.

In December TAPP will be delivering gifts to a very special family in need of extra help this holiday season. We will be providing gifts for a premature female infant and her parents.

The infant could use basic care giving items, such as wipes, powder, wash cloths, baby soap, as well as bottles and toys that light up or play music, baby clothing (newborn size), and diapers (newborn and size 1-2).

The parents did not request items for themselves, but would appreciate pots and pans and bath towels.

Wal-mart, Target, or HEB gift cards are always a good idea for perishable items or as a gift for the adults. If you are willing to donate a gift card please contact Linda Espino (Club President) at esmeralda_240@yahoo.com so that we can make arrangements to pick the card up for a safe delivery to the family. Here are some of the general guidelines to help determine what sorts of gifts to purchase for the family we will be helping this holiday season: Canned goods, cereal, fruits, holiday treats (cookies, candies, etc).

1. NEWS: We had a fun icebreaker and Linda announced our new historian is Jorge. Congratulations!
2. FUNDRAISERS: Volunteers signed up to help at the two fundraisers.
a. We need help to cover shifts from 8:30 am to 2 pm at the Antojitos festival on the SAC mall area on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Please let Linda know if you can volunteer an hour or more of your time selling drinks. Respond at tappatsac.gmail.com
b. Our second fundraiser is Movie Night at SAC on Friday, Sept. 30, we will sell sweet and salty treats to people watching the Green Lantern movie. If you can help at dusk for an hour or two, contact Linda. If you can't help, but would like to donate sodas, candies, or other sweet or salty snacks, drop them off at Ms. Cruz-Gonzales' office next week.
3. FALL SCHOLARSHIP: Voted to award $300 this semester. Applications will be posted soon with the new dates, but you can still use the old form at the blog to apply. The selection committee will be composed of Ana Bermudez (TAPP member) and Professors Gabrillo and Shute (English, Rdg, Ed. Dept). The deadline to apply is October 10 at noon.
4. Community service: On Wednesday, next week, Sept.21, we will deliver school supplies to Hawthorne School. If you'd like to go, meet at Ms. Cruz-Gonzales' office at 12:30.
5. Possible speaker: Plans are being made for a Saturday meeting to talk to U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett about education issues. Let us know if you are interested. More on this as it develops...
6. We are going to look into t-shirts or polos. Linda will be asking about your preferences.
7. Next meeting: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 1:30 (place TBA) and Wed., Oct. 12, 2 pm in GH 133.

My name is Linda Espino and I am running for president. I was executive assistant for TAPP during two semester. I regularly attend TAPP's meetings and events, and participated as a member for the TAPP scholarship commitee. My previous experiance as an officer will help me in the president position. I have also been involved in the Student Leadership program, and will continue to be in it during the fall semester. When I graduate, I will be working as an ESL teacher for M.S. students

Vice President: Aidee Davila

I would love to be a vice president of TAPP. I was the treasurer of TAPP last year and it was an amazing experience, I learn a lot as an active member and I know I can do more this follow school year. I want to become a teacher because I feel I can make a difference and I will love to pass out what I know to improve this world. I believe that with patience, understanding and love, we can make up a better future for everybody. I hope you trust in me and give me this opportunity to serve you all. Thank you.

Orszag, who served in the Bush and Obama administrations, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 in the Laurie Auditorium. Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having an excellent week.

First, I want to remind everyone about TAPP's meeting on Thursday Feb 3rd at 12:15 in room GH 101. From now on, our meetings will be held in room GH 101.
We will also be having a recruitment party, but the date is still TBA. Alrighty then, don't forget about the meeting. Bring a friend and a snack
There are also voulanteer opportunities.
1.) The fundraiser. The name of the event is Wildwest Rodoe Round Up,and we're going to have a canopy and will be selling drinks. The date is Feb 9th from 9am - 2 pm 2.) The President Round Table. We are looking for members who would like to voulanteer for the President Round Table. This event consists of a meeting with all the other clubs and to talk about the things we do as an organization. This event is the last Thursday of the month, and this month it'll be on the 24th. 3.) Movie night. The movie will be Green Hornet ( the best comedy movie ever! ) on March 1st. If the group is interested about doing movie night please let us know.
There are some upcoming leadership workshops. The dates for those workshops are posted on the blog. = )

Dear TAPP members, As is our tradition, TAPP has adopted a family with a disabled child for Christmas. If you’d like to donate anything, please drop it off in one of the boxes mentioned below. The little boy, a 6th grader, wears size 16 shirts and size 14 pants. His toy preferences are below. The mom didn’t ask for anything for herself, but we are sure she would enjoy any small personal items to make her life a little nicer. If you would like to help with the present wrapping or delivering the gifts, please join us to celebrate the season and the end of a good semester! We’ll wrap presents on the afternoon of Friday, Dec. 10, and we’ll meet for lunch before the delivery on Saturday, Dec. 11. Look for an email on the times and meeting places for both events. Good luck on your finals and hope to see you soon.

Special Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Coleman, Aidee and her sister Vanessa, and Ms. Bernal for selling candy, pickles and drinks at the Twilight showing on Friday.

We had a small crowd (due to the weather?), but we cleared $51.00, bringing our semester total to $350 raised this fall from all the fundraisers for our scholarship and organization events.

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered this semester.

Hello Everyone!!!

Lunch and Learn: Tuesday Oct. 5 at 12:15 in GH 128. Guest Speaker Sophie Caldera-Castañeda and Cythia Morton will be talking about all the opportunities for SAC education majors. They will also discuss Education degrees, certifications, transfers and more. Pizza will be available, so please RSVP by Monday Oct. 4.
Meet your Major: Wed. Oct 6 from 9:00-12:00 in the Fiesta Room. We need volunteers to help us promote education. Please sign up for an hour shift.

Volunteer activities during the fall semester to celebrate SAC's 85th Anniversary:

Heaven for Hope: Friday Oct. 15 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This activity includes preparing, serving, cleaning up and greeting residents.
Habitat for Humanity: Saturday Oct. 16 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The Food Bank will provide the lunch.

Please send us an e-mail and sign up by Mon. Oct 4 if you are interested. We need to know who is volunteering to fill out appropriate volunteer forms and to coordinate each event. Thanks!!

Remember to sign the Sign Up sheets at each event with the hours you volunteered.

TAPP will have a special prize at the end of the semester for TAPP members who volunteered more hours during the semester.

The purpose of the TAPP scholarship is to encourage students seeking careers in education and to recognize their commitment and achievements related to this goal.

Antojitos is Wed. Sept 22 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. TAPP will be selling sodas. Please send us an e-mail with the time you are available to help us out. The money that is raised on these events is used for the TAPP Scholarship that is awarded to a student every semester, TAPP Speaker series every semester, TAPP off campus activities, and more.

Matt was elected TAPP President last year.

Josey Lopez-Vice President.

Josey was elected Treasurer 08 and Vice President last year.

Linda Espino - Exectutive Assistant.

My name is Linda Espino and I wish to run for the executive assistant position.

I am 19 yrs old and this is my 3rd semester at SAC. I graduated from Fox Tech H.S. in 09.

I'm also currently enrolled in the Student leadership institute at SAC. I have good academic standing.

One of my goals is to become an ESL teacher for middle schoolers because I was an ESL student once.

This is my first year as a club member of TAPP and I am very excited about getting involved. I know that I will do my best as a member, and I really hope that I could participate as an officer.

I would love to be part of your TAPP officers. I would like to be your treasure. I'm a very dependable person and love team work. I love to make initiatives and know new people. I have some leadership experience, In High School I was the Spanish Honor Society President and Spanish Club Treasurer also I was an active member of the Student Council and The National Honor Society. Dear TAPP Students,

SAC's Office of Student Life is offering a training series for students interested in developing as leaders--as a future teacher, that's you! They will hold a several sessions on how to run a meeting, come up with icebreakers, plan an event, and much more. These helpful sessions are free and they start this Tuesday, September 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Loftin Student Center 2nd floor "Craft Room." All the sessions will be from 1 to 3 on either a Tuesday or Thursday in September and October. If you would like to attend, you need to contact Tyler Archer at 210-486-0125. I encourage you to take advantage of these sessions, especially if you have decided to get more involved in campus life this year. If you attend ALL the sessions, you'll receive a Student Leadership Certificate for your portfolio.

Were looking for members to write 5-10 sentences stating your personal, academic, and TAPP goals as nomination for your interest in holding an officer's position.

President

-Attend meetings and activities

-Help set annual goals for the group

-Arrange meetings and activities and prepare meeting agendas

-Conduct meetings

-Appoint and release committee chairs

-Ensure that TAAP is represented at campus or community events as needed

Vice President

-Assume the duties of the President when the latter requests or is absent

-Confirm rooms for meetings and locations for activities

-Ensure that meetings and activities are publicized

Treasurer

-Help advisors maintain and monitor financial records

-prepare the annual financial report

-Make deposits and withdrawals on behalf of the organization

Secretary

-Record minutes of all meetings

-Maintain membership records

-Handle external correspondence (emails, announcements, etc)

-Keep members informed of group activities

-prepare the annual report with the President

Executive Assistant

-Assist the President and Vice-President in their duties as needed

Lastly, another reminder to yall about enjoying our next fundraiser event which will be the Antojitos Festival on September 22nd from 9-2. Were hoping members can volunteer anytime between those hours to keep our booth open for the festival. TAPP will be selling cokes, water, and sport drinks, so if for any reason you cant help with the event then helping with donations of these items would be a HUGE help, as well! Even if you were not an active member last year, we would still like to hear from you. Also, let me know if you are interested in an officer position. Our V-P, Josey Lopez, from ’09-’10, is willing to help again in that officer position. Other positions are: President, Treasurer, Historian, Executive Assistant to the President. It’s important you email me some facts about yourself and your goals as an officer if you are interested. I’ll then be able to coordinate the information so that other members may have a chance to vote on officer nominations. Be aware you can nominate yourself as well as someone else. We need to have our student officers in place no later than Sept. 12 so that I can send that information to the Student Life Office.

Let me know a good time/day at which MOST of us can meet. We cannot obviously all be available at the exact time. In the past we have met usually on Wednesdays 1:00 or 2:00. We’ve also met on a Tuesday 1:30 and sometimes 2:00. It would help me to settle on a time and place to meet the week of Sept. 9-13 so that we can make plans for the campus-wide event Hispanic Heritage Week and our first annual fall fundraiser (I think Sept. 25, Wednesday. I don’t know yet what we’ll be allowed to sale, but I’ll send a message to Student Life, Tyler Archer, asking for more details on the fundraiser.

However, first we need to make sure we have enough members on hand to help us out since the fundraiser runs usually from 8:00a.m. (to set-up) through 2:00p.m. or later (to close-up). We will need to make sure we have enough people on hand.

Women of Vision Scholarship Essay Contest
Essay Contest Purpose:In honor of Women's History month, the SAC Women’s Center invites SAC women students to explore and celebrate the histories of women by participating in our essay contest.
The purpose of the essay contest is to honor San Antonio College women, staff, faculty and/or administrators who encourage and promote sensitivity to and awareness of issues that relate to women.
Women Making History: Students are to choose one San Antonio College woman, staff, administrator or faculty member (members of the Department of Services for Women & Non-Traditional Students are to be excluded) and write about that woman's contribution to the college, community, city, or to the state of Texas.
Awards: Two students will be selected to receive the $500 Women of Vision Scholarship. These two scholarship recipients as well as the two SAC staff, faculty or administrators selected for the Women of Vision Award will be honored on March 4th at 9:25 a.m. at VATC 120.
Qualification: San Antonio College women students enrolled in 6 or more hours with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 may participate
Essays should be a minimum of 500 words, typed, and double-spaced.
Essays must have a title. The title of your essay should be at the top of the first page. Do not put your name on the essay. Put your name on the entry form only.
Complete an official entry form and staple to essay.
Winners must agree to attend the awards ceremony on March 4, 9:25-10:40 a.m.
Essays should include a persuasive explanation of:
Why you chose to focus on a particular woman
How this woman has inspired you or others
How the woman has impacted and/or transformed the environment for women through her actions
How the woman supports and advocates for women
Essays should be well organized, with an introduction, body, and conclusion
Essays should include specific examples

This family is in need of blankets, curtains, and dishes. They also need food for their holiday season like turkey, chicken, canned foods, cereal and fresh fruit. HEB Gift cards are greatly appreciated along with holiday treats!

As part of the Go Green initiative at SAC, TAPP has responsibility for the first floor of Gonzales Hall. Look for the new toters to arrive in the halls, after the compactor is delivered in two weeks. Next week on the 8th, Josey and I have the opportunity as monitors to tour the Greenstar facility (off 410 east) that will be recycling SAC waste. My name is Melanie Myers, and I would like to nominate myself for the office of Historian in the Teaching Academy Program Peers (T.A.P.P.). I love attending events and club activities, and I'm rarely without a camera, so I think that I would excel in this office. I am working towards my Associates degree at SAC, and I plan on transferring to UIW once I have finished, so that I can continue on and become an English teacher for High School students.
Hello fellow TAPP members, my name is Rhiannon Canedo and I am running for Executive Assistance. I have been coming to SAC for.... a while. I plan on transferring to the University of Incarnate Word by summer 2010, where I will achieve my goal in recieving a BA in education for early and secondary education. I would also like to get certified in special education. My long term goal is to continue my education and get my masters and then a Ph.D so that I may become a professor in music. My name is Jennifer Barrios, I've been attending San Antonio College since August 2006 and will be graduating this December with an Associates of Arts in Teaching. I'm originally from Brownsville, Texas and moved to San Antonio in the fall of '05. I am interested in either being an English or Chemistry teacher. It sounds like one extreme to another, but I am very interested in both studies and feel I can be a successful teacher in either discipline. I hope this next year will be exciting, and I look forward to the following semesters. I will do all I can to help TAPP grow, motivate and inform members of opportunities and benefits to help them reach their educational goals.

My name is George Pickering-Seba. I am writing you this letter in order to nominate myself for the office of presidency. I am a sophomore at San Antonio College with 61 hours completed. I have a 3.337 grade point average and am dedicated to greatly improving that average and myself. I would like to become the president of TAPP because I would enjoy the challenges that the position demands. I am an individual that constantly seeks to challenge myself; I abhor boring activities or doing things that are not stimulating. For example, I have played the violin since I was in the sixth grade. This musical instrument requires much practice and never fails to entertain me. Finally, my pursuit of a college degree is further evidence of my desire to better myself. I have aspirations of obtaining a career and earning more money, all of which will be made possible through my dedicated scholastic efforts. Hello Fellow Tapp Members! It's me Josey (TAPP historian Spring 09) , and I am really looking forward to another year with all of you! I am excited to see what my position for TAPP will be this coming year, as well as the club itself. I would like to start by nominating myself for TAPP Vice President, I feel that because last year was my first year with the club I would feel more comfortable taking a smaller role than jumping to President. My goals and participation for the club would not be any different because I will still try to give my best efforts into any events TAPP has going on. I love being a part of TAPP and enjoy the time spent being involved and surrounded by peers I can relate with. My interest in working with children in the future help keep me motivated to be productive and make my college experience the best I can. Along with my education goals, I have a wonderful family that give me great support with everything I do for school and will love to support me in any way. I'm am currently a clerk with the San Antonio Education Partnership Department. I am very good at organizing things and filing them accuratly. I have excellent communication skills and although I have never been in a leading position, it has been one of my passions since my high school days. I am currently working toward my Associate of Arts in Teaching and I hope to transfer to U.T.S.A to finish my Batchelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in English as a Second Language (E.S.L).

Our group has been asked to join in with other student organizations as San Antonio College GOES GREEN.

GO GREEN is a campus-wide effort to make SAC part of the effort to improve our world, so it fits well with our mission as future teachers!
It's also a great opportunity if you are looking for service hours for class or scholarships. We need a volunteer to serve as TAPP's GoGreen officer.
This member would help coordinate the recycling effort for ONE building on our campus, by setting up a schedule for members to take turns wheeling the toters to the curb for pick-up.
The GoGreen officer will get a t-shirt and be invited for a tour of SAC's new recycling facilities.

If you would like to volunteer, please send us an email, also telling us which building you would like to request. Consider a building that other education majors would be likely to be in.

These days have a way of taking us back to when we

Congradulations, Department of Early Childhood Studies

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) granted accreditation to SAC’s Early Childhood Studies degree program (the first in Texas). Early Childhood assistant professor Sandra Enders said the department worked nearly two years elevating the program to the rigorous NAEYC standards, by creating rubrics for assignments and changing the department’s leadership model to a shared one. Co-chairs of the department are Ellen Marshall, Ph.D., and Ana DeHoyos-O’Connor.

NAEYC (est. 1926) is the world's largest organization concerned with education and development services for children from birth through age 8, has nearly 100,000 members. The SAC Early Childhood Center, an on-site educational lab facility for the Department of Early Childhood Studies, is also accredited by NAEYC.
